Inhambane

Inhambane is a sleepy historic town some 485 km north of Maputo. It has some great colonial architecture (in a low-key sort of a way) and is considered by many to be one of the prettiest towns in Mozambique. The architecture and atmosphere reflect a diverse and exciting past stretching back to the 11th century. Muslim and Persian traders visited here as did Vasco da Gama in the late 1500s. The port of Inhambane also later became a major centre for ivory and slave trade as well as whaling. This area is now one of the few in southern Mozambique where the last remaining Dugong (Sea Cow) can be seen.

It is situated on a peninsula overlooking a bay, and also serves as a springboard to the coastal resorts around Tofo beach. Canoeing and Dhow trips are a wonderful and relaxing activity for all to enjoy, and not necessarily reserved for athletes.

You can also request a visit to the Mocucune Peninsula, chasing a chicken for the grill and drink a local beer. In the town of Inhambane, visitors will find a busy centre with an airport and harbour as well as banks, petrol stations, shops, markets and sidewalk cafés. Inhambane is situated on a bay and visitors can enjoy a drink at the harbour and watch the dhows (local sailing boats) sail back and forth to Maxixe (pronounced “Masheesh”).

ACCOMMODATION:

The lodge is situated on stilts on the crystal clear waters of the warm Indian Ocean. This eco-paradise is home to flocks of flamingo’s, tropical fish and the very rare dugong. The sunsets at Flamingo Bay are nothing less than breathtaking.

This lodge is unique and the only one of it’s kind in Africa. Flamingo Bay prides itself in having an undisturbed eco-setting that is peaceful and pristine and we endeavour to keep it that way. Because of the setting and exclusivity we do not allow children under 12 years at the lodge allowing guests to appreciate the peacefulness, elegance and romance of this tropical getaway.

Set aside from the chalets and connected by wooden walkways is the main building, which can also be accessed from the land and is fronted by the tidal waters of the bay. For those not wishing to walk golf carts are available to ferry guests between the chalets and main building.

CHALETS:
Our luxury water chalets are spacious and well appointed with balcony, wide opening sliding doors and airconditioning. The chalets and furniture are constructed from beautiful local hardwoods from Mozambique. Each chalet is situated on stilts in the crystal clear tidal waters of Inhambane Bay. Sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and boating may be enjoyed directly from each chalet.

HONEYMOON DESTINATION:
Flamingo Bay Water Lodge is the ultimate honeymoon destination. The chalets are situated away from the main building, adding to the experience of tranquillity and serenity.

An elegant restaurant overlooks the inviting swimming pool, which merges into the view across the bay. Enjoy cocktails on the spacious pool deck while watching the sunset or enjoy your meals in the morning or evening either indoors or outdoors. The gourmet restaurant offers sumptuous meals specialising in local dishes of Mozambique including fresh prawns, fish, crabs and calamari, which are all caught locally.

The well stocked bar is a gathering point attracting guests to share their days experiences in a convivial atmosphere. The bar overlooks the pool and offers spectacular sunsets. An upstairs area enhances the view as the day draws to a close.

Then there is the Coffee Bar - an ideal place to relax over a good cup of coffee and a light meal.

The comfortable upstairs lounge allows one to relax in a peaceful environment while enjoying a drink or light snack.
